The Invisible World

October 27, 2008

I have been watching as the nation I was born in has continued to degenerate into ugliness. The things my friends and I laughed at as that which could never happen, is indeed happening. Those groups of people who used to be on the fringe are now the mainstream and I am now on the outside looking in. Ed Parker says that there are three kinds of people in this world;

1. Those who make things happen.

2. Those who let things happen.

3. Those who say “What happened.”

It is a sad indictment upon the Christian community that we have sat idly by and have watched evil take power hoping that ‘somebody would do something about it.” And now we are walking around, scratching our heads and saying “What happened?” I will tell you what happened. In the 60’s there were groups of people who marched for their causes and did sit ins and other forms of protests. There were others like the Weather Underground and the Black Panthers who used violence to try to achieve their goals.

But they were not able to accomplish their desired purposes so they switched tactics. They put their own twist on ‘If you can’t beat em, join em’ and began to get educated and slowly weaved themselves into positions of power. Today we are seeing what happens when wickedness ascends to high places in the government of a country. Indeed, we are one election away from adopting a communistic form of government and the enemy has done its job very well. They have rewritten history books to erase the things they don’t want people to know about while emphasizing those things that will achieve their objective; communism.

Again I want to say that history proves that real communism doesn’t work. The plan is to equalize everyone but the end is always a monstrous dictatorship and the horrible deaths of anyone who dissents. It is interesting that the Weather Underground, during one of their ‘brainstorming sessions’ was contemplating the deaths of 25 million people who could not be re-educated. As I said, they have their own twist on the saying ‘If you can’t beat em, join em’ and that twist reads thus; “If they won’t join us, kill em!”

So you can see the dilemma we are in. We have a group of murderous megalomaniacs who are out to get absolute power over this nation and they will stop at nothing to accomplish this. They will lie, murder, cover up, whatever it takes to get what they want.

But this morning I want us to take a look behind the scenes so to speak and see what is driving these people on in their quest for power. Now remember what we saw in our study of Romans 5. We saw that mankind was born righteous, in the image of God. He was given everything he could ever want including unbroken fellowship with God. But not being satisfied with that he decided to that he wanted to be like God. Adam and Eve bought the lie of the devil. The devil wanted to be like God and was kicked out of heaven for his trouble. Hell is in his future for his rebellion against God.

Likewise, when Adam and Eve fell from their blessed state of grace they unleashed upon this world all the ills that we now see magnified in this hour. It is also interesting to me that there have been other times in the history of this nation, of this world for that matter, when men have believed it was the last hour. With the invention of the Atomic Bomb men have had in their possession the ability to destroy whole cities with a single bomb. Indeed it is now possible for us to destroy the world if God were to lift His restraining hand. There was great fear in the 50’s that Atomic war was imminent and people built bomb shelters in their backyards in preparation for that day.

The 60’s were also filled with anxiety concerning such a war but then all kinds of different groups of protestors began to march for various causes inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and Karl Marx and the hippies appeared bringing with them their perverted views of illicit sex and the recreational use of drugs; all in the name of freedom.

God had mercy upon our land in the 70’s as He swept through the length and breadth of the land in mighty revival power. We were granted a reprieve from the moral decay of our society. It is not that sin was eradicated, just held in check for a while. Then after the gracious gift of Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr. into the Presidency came the immoral Bill Clinton. Sin was given an exalted platform from which to preach its anti-gospel. The 90’s were a time when this nation let its guard down and the enemies of our land took full advantage, bombing the World Trade Center, and the government building in Oklahoma City and the USS Cole culminating in the destruction of the World Trade Center buildings on 9/11/01.

But God was merciful giving us a President who has done everything is his power to keep such an attack from happening again despite opposition from our own government and the rendering of aid and comfort to the enemy from the same quarter. And now, as I said at the beginning of this lesson, we are just 10 days away from electing a communist president and putting in place a super majority of communist senators and representatives who will put an end to free speech and free enterprise.

This is the first time this has happened in my lifetime. We have never had such a prospect before us. We have had wicked men in power before but they were always held in check by either the legislative or the judiciary. The Checks and Balances were in place. But today the communists have infiltrated every branch of government, both local and national and if God doesn’t intervene on our behalf, this is indeed the end of the United States of America and the emergence of the USSA. Godlessness reigns in high places and persecution is just around the corner.

But there is more going on than meets the eye. You see, there is a power behind all of this that is driving it on. The devil cannot stand anything that has to do with God. He hates holiness. The Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is anathema to him and God’s people are obstacles that must be removed. His minions, those in congress and the senate and the possible future president are of the same mind. Christians with their Bibles and their holy standard are obstacles that must be removed. We are holding up the progress of society with our insistence that the Bible, that ancient document from antiquity is relevant today. We are seen as inhibitors of progress because we still cling to an archaic religion which according to the enemy, ‘was dis-proven years ago.’ We are obstacles in the way of progress and therefore we must be eliminated.

Now the power behind all these people is the devil. Look with me to our text which is found in Eph 6:10-18. Paul says 10 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Now I for one have not done much thinking about spiritual warfare. Because of my experience with Pentecostal types I have simply ignored it. This is not good. There must be a balance in our theology. We cannot overlook the fact that wickedness is flourishing on a grand scale such as was seen in the pre-flood days of Noah and in the cities of the plains of Sodom. Why is this? It is because God, the restrainer against evil has relaxed His omnipotent hand and allowed for the increase in wickedness. Remember that nothing can happen except God has decreed it. God is indeed moving in this land. Wicked men are growing still more wicked and true Christians are seeking the face of our Father in Heaven and are going forth to battle. But we must understand something here. We wrestle not against flesh and blood. Martin Luther wrote;

“Did we in our own strength confide our striving would be losing.

Were not the right man on our side the man of God’s own choosing.”

You see, we cannot do battle with the devil as is seen in the example of Pentecostal preachers. They shout at the devil and do all kinds of gyrations and whatnot, all for an outward show. But these are ignorant of the nature of the enemy. 1Pe 5:8 tells us to “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Who is there that can stand alone against a roaring lion? And the devil is a supernatural being. His power is much greater than anything we could ever muster up in our own selves. We are out of our league here. But God!

You see, we are not to rely upon anyone or anything other than God. We are finite while He is infinite. He is almighty and has already defeated the devil. Indeed the devil is merely a tool in God’s hands to accomplish His divine will. Now I want you to notice a passage with me from the book of James. We read these very clear instructions in Jas 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Do you notice the order of business here? We are first to submit ourselves to GOD. What does that mean? It means we must bow before our great God and Savior and we are to live a life that states, “Not my will but Your will be done.’ It means we are to live according to His commands, according to His stated will. In this way we will prove that we love God. Our deeds will be a visible testimony of our love to Him! This submission is not a one time thing. We don’t suddenly submit to God when we want something from Him do we.

In that case we have revealed our concept of God: we believe that He is merely a divine butler or a genie in a bottle who is at our beck and call, who is merely here to fill our orders, to supply our wants. We produce our laundry list of ‘desires’ and ‘burdens’ and demand that He fill our order. But this is not God. God is indescribable. We have no way of stating in mere words who He is. Now the men who wrote the 1689 confession of faith tried to give us a scriptural definition of God and I want for us to look at it. But remember, this is merely a glimpse, taken from the scripture of the nature of God.

Chapter 2: Of God and of the Holy Trinity

1. The Lord our God is but one only living and true God; {#1Co 8:4,6 De 6:4} whose subsistence is in and of himself, {#Jer 10:10 Isa 48:12} infinite in being and perfection; whose essence cannot be comprehended by any but himself; {#Ex 3:14} a most pure spirit, {#Joh 4:24} invisible, without body, parts, or passions, who only has immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach to; {#1Ti 1:17 De 4:15-16} who is immutable, {#Mal 3:6} immense, {#1Ki 8:27 Jer 23:23} eternal, {#Ps 90:2} incomprehensible, almighty, {#Ge 17:1} every way infinite, most holy, {#Isa 6:3} most wise, most free, most absolute; working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and most righteous will {#Ps 115:3 Isa 46:10} for his own glory; {#Pr 16:4 Ro 11:36} most loving, gracious, merciful, longsuffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; the rewarder of them that diligently seek him, {#Ex 34:6-7 Heb 11:6} and withal most just and terrible in his judgements, {#Ne 9:32-33} hating all sin, {#Ps 5:5-6} and who will by no means clear the guilty. {#Ex 34:7 Na 1:2-3}

2. God, having all life, {#Joh 5:26} glory, {#Ps 148:13} goodness, {#Ps 119:68} blessedness, in and of himself, is alone in and to himself all-sufficient, not standing in need of any creature which he has made, nor deriving any glory from them, {#Job 22:2-3} but only manifesting his own glory in, by, to, and upon them; he is the alone fountain of all being, of whom, through whom, and to whom are all things, {#Ro 11:34-36} and he hath most sovereign dominion over all creatures, to do by them, for them, or upon them, whatever himself pleases; {#Da 4:25,34-35} in his sight all things are open and manifest, {#Heb 4:13} his knowledge is infinite, infallible, and independent upon the creature, so as nothing is to him contingent or uncertain: {#Eze 11:5 Ac 15:18} he is most holy in all his counsels, in all his works, {#Ps 145:17} and in all his commands; to him is due from angels and men, whatever worship, {#Re 5:12-14} service, or obedience, as creatures they owe to the Creator, and whatever he is further pleased to require of them.

3. In this divine and infinite Being there are three persons, the Father, the Word or Son, and Holy Spirit, {#1Jo 5:7 Mt 28:19 2Co 13:14} of one substance, power, and eternity, each having the whole divine essence, yet the essence undivided, {#Ex 3:14 Joh 14:11 1Co 8:6} the Father is of none, neither begotten nor proceeding; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; {#Joh 1:14,18} the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father and the Son; {#Joh 15:26 Ga 4:6} all infinite, without beginning, therefore but one God, who is not to be divided in nature and being, but distinguished by several peculiar relative properties and personal relations; which doctrine of the Trinity is the foundation of all our communion with God, and comfortable dependence upon him.

This is just a glimpse of our awesome God, who granted wisdom to godly men and enabled them to draw out of His holy word this blessed glimpse of the Divine Majesty.

And in all of scripture there is no place where anyone has just walked up to the Father or the Son in arrogant boldness and issued a list of demands. Anyone who has ever been in His presence has been emptied of all self and has pronounced woes upon himself or laid his hand to his mouth describing himself as a fool, one without knowledge. God is indeed an awesome being.

Though we wrestle not against flesh and blood, we have an advocate on our side who is Almighty. While the power of the devil and his principalities is great, they are still finite, created beings. For all of their great power and might, they are no match for omnipotence. If they were God would not have been able to cast the devil out of heaven. Indeed, they would have either had to coexist or God would have been the one ousted. But again, we are talking about the Creator. The Creator has power over the clay to do with as He wills. He accomplishes His will in the host of heaven, (this includes principalities and powers) and among the inhabitants of the earth (all of creation is moved by the power and at the pleasure of God.) The creation strives for mastery and seeks to throw off the chains of omnipotence, “But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.” Ps 115:3

Therefore we must submit to God. We must cast ourselves upon Him in all things at all times and then from this place we can resist the devil. And our resistance is not in our own strength either. If we are to resist the devil successfully it must be in the strength of the Lord. Only the Lord God can cause the devil to flee. Therefore all things must be done with this in mind.

Now let us continue in Ephesians 6 and see the truth of what I have just said. We read in verse 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, Whose armor? It is God’s armor that we are to be clothed in. We are like snails without shells; by ourselves we are defenseless if we are not clothed in the armor of God. And Paul states this very point when he says, “Therefore, take up the full armor of God so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

I am here to tell you that the evil day is here. 14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, 15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

The evil day is upon us and we are to be about our Father’s business, standing firm in the faith, proclaiming the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with our lives and by our words. And we must be walking in the strength of the Lord for by ourselves have no hope. The enemy is too strong for us. I want to close with an illustration from the Book of Daniel that illustrates this spiritual warfare which we are involved in. Look with me at the tenth chapter of Daniel. The context for what we are about to read is this; Daniel had been fasting and praying before the Lord.

After twenty one days, an angel stood before him while he was beside the Tigris River. In this account of divine visitation we will see that men are not even haughty before angels and we will see the severity of the warfare we are involved in.

We pick up the narrative in verse 5 where Daniel says, “I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a certain man dressed in linen, whose waist was girded with a belt of pure gold of Uphaz. 6 His body also was like beryl, his face had the appearance of lightning, his eyes were like flaming torches, his arms and feet like the gleam of polished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a tumult. This is an awe inspiring picture of an angel. Note that this is not God, nor is it Jesus Christ in a pre-incarnate vision. This is an angel, a ministering spirit sent to minister to them who will inherit eternal life.

Continuing in verse 7 “Now I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, while the men who were with me did not see the vision; nevertheless, a great dread fell on them, and they ran away to hide themselves. Again we see no boldness or arrogance. Instead we see fear, dread terror. 8 So I was left alone and saw this great vision; yet no strength was left in me, for my natural color turned to a deathly pallor, and I retained no strength. Even the godly Daniel is not bold or arrogant. Indeed in the presence of a mere angel, he is overcome. Verse 9 But I heard the sound of his words; and as soon as I heard the sound of his words, I fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face to the ground. 10 Then behold, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11 He said to me, “O Daniel, man of high esteem, understand the words that I am about to tell you and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling. Still we have nothing that smacks of the description that some give as to what they would do if they encountered God. And again, this is an angel, not the LORD.

12 “Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words. Now notice closely; 13 “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; Is the angel referring to Cyrus the king of Persia or to his satraps? Remember what happened when one angel was let loose upon the army of Assyria. 185,000 men died. We are not talking about humans but about the devil and his minions. The “prince” of the kingdom of Persia withstood this angel…then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. This is Michael the Archangel. And so we have just seen that there are principalities and powers assigned to the kingdoms of this world. We truly wrestle not against flesh and blood but what is behind these human agencies; namely demons.

Let’s continue with verse 14 and I will break this down a bit…“Now I (the angel) have come to give you (Daniel) an understanding of what will happen to your people (the Jews) in the latter days, for the vision pertains to the days yet future.” 15 When he had spoken to me according to these words, I turned my face toward the ground and became speechless. 16 And behold, one who resembled a human being was touching my lips; then I opened my mouth and spoke and said to him who was standing before me, “O my lord, as a result of the vision anguish has come upon me, and I have retained no strength. 17 “For how can such a servant of my lord talk with such as my lord? As for me, there remains just now no strength in me, nor has any breath been left in me.” Has Daniel laid out his laundry list of demands yet? No! Anyone who says they are going to do so has no knowledge of God.

Apart from Him we can do nothing. Daniel can’t even listen to this angel until he is strengthened by the angel. We continue; 18 Then this one with human appearance touched me again and strengthened me. 19 He said, “O man of high esteem, do not be afraid. Peace be with you; take courage and be courageous!” Now as soon as he spoke to me, I received strength and said, “May my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.” What we have seen in Daniel is the reality of anyone who comes into contact with God. They are without strength and must be helped in order to even listen.

Finally notice verse 20 Then he said, “Do you understand why I came to you? (to give you understanding of a vision of the end times) But I shall now return to fight against the prince of Persia; a demon so I am going forth, and behold, the prince of Greece is about to come.” This is yet another demon. Also this is a foretelling of the end of the kingdom of the Medes and the Persians and the beginning of the reign of Alexander the Great and the Greeks.

I have said all of this to give you an understanding of what we are up against. Barack Obama is not working of his own accord. His agenda and that of the Democratic Party is the agenda of the devil and they are being energized by the devil to accomplish his ends. Some would say that I am being judgmental and “How do you know that they are being led by the devil?” Well the devil is a liar and the father of lies. He is lawless and notice how the schemes of the Democrats are the same. From Obama to the media, to the workers in the street we see lawlessness. The dead vote; the illegal vote; the suppression of legal votes and voters, all are being used by the Democrats to win.

Lawlessness reigns in the judiciary with the exaltation of sin and the suppression of anything good. And behind all of this, in the invisible world we have the devil and his demons striving for the mastery.

Yes we are in a battle! The monsters are stripping off their masks and openly showing themselves for who they really are. They are brazen and don’t care who sees or knows. The days ahead look dark! But that is only because we can’t see what’s going on behind the scenes. God does not see as man sees and indeed God has declared the end from the beginning. As the lot is cast into the lap we will cast our votes Lord willing on November 4th but we must rest in this confident assurance that the outcome is of the Lord. If He has decreed that the end is here, then I say to you “Look up for your redemption draweth nigh.

But as long as we are here, as long as we are alive and remain upon this earth we must be about our Father’s business. We must hold forth the truth of the gospel while we still have breath in our lungs and life in our bones. Let us pray for one another that utterance will be given to us in the opening of our mouths so that we will be able to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel: that we may speak boldly as we ought to speak.

Though the days may seem dark, we are children of light and children of the day. We have hope, a confident assurance of a home in heaven when we die. The world does not know this. We have inside information which we must not horde but share. We must stand forth and proclaim God’s truth. If we truly love our lost family members and friends we will do so, even if it means just handing them a gospel tract and praying for them. We must do whatever we can. We must not hide the light of Jesus but we must stand forth and shine as lights in the darkness. Remember that just as the rulers of darkness are not alone in their work, neither are we. Jesus is with us and He will give us the words to say and opportunities to say them. Stand firm then, clothed in the Holy armor of light and give your all for Jesus Name! Amen!
